What is causing my clogged drain?

Kitchen sink clog's are generally caused by soap and grease building up inside the drain line over time. These substances deposit and layer on the walls of the drain as they cool after being flushed out of the kitchen sink. Eventually they clog the line completely causing a backup. This type of clog needs to be removed with a special grease cutting head which scrapes the grease off the walls of the pipe.

Toilet clog's are mostly caused by some kind of obstruction being flushed down the toilet. Anything that doesn't dissolve like toilet paper will get caught around the flange area and cause a toilet blockage. Common items are wipes and q-tips. Roots can also find their way into the sewer line causing a sewer clog.

Bathroom sink and bathtub clog's are commonly caused by hair buildup as well as soap in the drain line.

Washing machine clog's are caused by lint and soap residue building up in the drain line. On many houses the washer drain line and the kitchen sink drain line connect with each other at a Y junction and it is here that blockages are commonly found. This is why you might experience a clog at both fixtures at the same time.

Sewer line clog's can be caused by roots, a broken sewer line or some kind of obstruction in the line. Your plumber will be able to tell you what is causing your sewer backup and possible further steps to repair the sewer line so it doesn't happen again.

All of these problems can be fixed by correctly snaking your drain or sewer lines with the right equipment. We strongly discourage the use of chemical drain line cleaners as they cannot clean a drain line anywhere near as well as using a snake. They are also very caustic and bad for our sewer treatment facilities.
